Understanding Indian PIN Codes
A Postal Index Number (PIN) code is a **six-digit numeric code** used by India Post. Introduced on August 15, 1972, this system simplifies mail sorting and routing by eliminating language confusion and handwritten address errors.
Standard 6-Digit PIN Structure
- Digit 1 (Region): Points to one of the 9 postal regions in India (1-8 cover geographical states, while 9 is reserved for the Army Postal Service).
- Digit 2 (Sub-Region): Identifies the postal sub-circle or state boundary division.
- Digit 3 (District): Points to the sorting district office within the state.
- Digits 4-6 (Post Office): Pinpoints the specific delivery post office branch routing your parcel.
